House

The house is the clearest example of a dream symbol that traditions interpret structurally. Rather than assigning the whole image one meaning, interpreters read its parts, and they read them as parts of a person.

The mapping is fairly stable across traditions. Upper floors are associated with thought and with what the dreamer is aware of; basements and cellars with what is stored, forgotten, or deliberately not examined. The kitchen is associated with sustenance and, by extension, with what maintains the household. Bedrooms are read as the private self, and bathrooms as what is processed and discarded — a reading that is older and less crude than it sounds.

Because of this structure, the condition of the house is read as the condition of the person. A house in disrepair is not read as a statement about property. Interpreters ask which part was damaged, and treat a leaking roof differently from a cracked foundation.

Finding an unfamiliar room in a familiar house is the most discussed image in this group, and unusually for dream interpretation the traditions largely agree. It is read as discovering capacity or history in yourself that you did not know was there. Whether the discovery is welcome depends almost entirely on what the room contains, and interpreters treat an empty new room as the most straightforwardly positive version.

Being locked out of your own house reverses the reading into estrangement from yourself, or from a role you had assumed was securely yours. Being unable to find a room you know exists is read similarly but more mildly.

Folk traditions add a layer the psychological readings do not: in several of them the house stands for the household rather than the individual, so damage is read as affecting the family. It is worth knowing which of the two frameworks an interpretation is using, because they can point in different directions from the same image.

Moving house is treated as a separate symbol concerned with transition rather than with the self.
