Car

Of all modern symbols, the car is the one dream interpretation has absorbed most completely, because it maps so cleanly onto an older idea: a journey the dreamer is making, with someone at the controls. The whole reading organises around the question of who is driving.

Driving your own car is read as being in control of your direction — the straightforward version, where the reading then attends to the road. A clear road is progress; a blocked or winding one is difficulty; a fork is a decision. The car itself, in this version, is simply the self in motion.

Being a passenger changes the reading fundamentally. It is interpreted as a life, or a situation, whose direction is being set by someone else — sometimes willingly, sometimes not. Interpreters attend to who is driving and whether the dreamer is comfortable with it, reading the back seat as the furthest remove from control.

Losing control is the group of variants people report most and worry about most. Brakes that fail are read as an inability to stop or slow something that has gained momentum — the most common single version, and one that tends to arrive when the dreamer feels events outpacing them. A car that steers on its own, or an accelerator that sticks, is read similarly: direction taken out of the dreamer's hands.

A crash is read as a collision between the dreamer's course and something else — a conflict, a consequence, a course correction forced rather than chosen. Interpreters generally read the crash as the impact of two directions meeting rather than as literal disaster, and attend to what was struck.

An empty driver's seat, with the car moving and no one at the wheel, is a striking variant read as a life proceeding without anyone directing it — momentum continuing after intention has left.

A car that will not start reverses the reading into stalled progress: the intention to move present, the means withheld.
