Spider

Spiders occupy an unusual position in dream interpretation: they are widely feared, yet the readings attached to them are more often constructive than threatening. The reason is that interpreters attend to the web, not to the animal.

The web is the useful part of the image. It is made deliberately, takes time, and works by waiting rather than pursuing. Traditions that otherwise share nothing tend to converge on patience and on slow, deliberate work — a project assembled thread by thread, or a situation arranged so carefully that whatever comes into it is already caught.

That last reading cuts both ways, and the ambiguity is genuine rather than a hedge. The person who built the web and the creature caught in it are in the same structure. Interpreters generally decide between them by asking where the dreamer was standing: watching the web from outside points to work being done, while being tangled in it points to a situation of one's own making that has become difficult to leave.

Jungian readings often place the spider with the feminine creative principle, connecting it to weaving and to the fates of classical mythology, where thread and life-span are the same substance. Folk traditions are more practical: in a number of European ones a spider seen in the morning is unlucky and one seen at night is fortunate, and in several Asian traditions a spider descending on its thread is read as arriving news.

Fear complicates the reading rather than settling it. Because arachnophobia is common, a frightening spider dream may report the phobia rather than anything symbolic. Most interpreters ask whether the fear in the dream was proportionate to what the spider actually did. A spider that merely appeared and caused panic is usually read as being about the fear itself.

Size is treated as intensity rather than as a separate meaning. A larger spider marks a larger version of whatever the reading already was, not a different one.
